First talk - Combatting Climate Change with Helge Urdal
12th April - 2-4pm - Otley Methodist Church
We are delighted to announce that Otley 2030 will be holding a series of talks across 2025 that will look at key issues related to climate change, nature recovery, and social justice. These events will give local people the chance to learn about interesting topics from experts in their field and also find out more about Otley 2030 projects and how they can get involved.
The first talk will be held on Saturday 12th April, 2-4pm, at Otley Methodist Church and the topic will be:
Combatting Climate Change
How to get back to 1.5 ֠ C and have Clean Power in Great Britain by 2030

Helge Urdal will deliver this initial Otley 2030 talk. Helge is based in Otley following a 50 year career in the electricity industry contributing widely in Great Britain towards his cherished low carbon future. He has also been active in his native Norway and on behalf of Europe in China, India and USA to run carbon free electricity systems reliably. Helge is now a trustee of Otley 2030 and volunteers in our Energy Group.

After a brief explanation of the mechanism of global warming, Helge will share his insight into where we are currently worldwide and specifically in GB, where we are heading and how we can adjust this path to achieve the big targets of returning, after an overshoot, to 1.5֠C global warming by 2100 and make Great Britain electricity carbon free as early as 2030.
How much is the talk?
Adults: £3
Concessions: £1.50
We have an option on the Eventbrite link for people to sign up for free if they can't pay for whatever reason.

What happens to the money?
The bulk of the money raised through ticket sales and donations will go to cover the cost of the events. This includes room hire, promotions, speaker expenses (when relevant), IT etc. If there is a surplus generated, this money will go towards supporting Otley 2030 projects, like the Community Larder, Weston Woods, Walk to School, Nature gardens and tree planting.
